What to expect

Discover the origins of Kazakhstan Our journey begins at the Zhibek Zholy metro station, a symbolic starting point because its design reflects the Great Silk Road that once passed through the city. Here you will learn about the birth of Kazakhstan and the crucial role the Silk Road played in its development.

Almaty’s Soviet Heritage: Empire and Constructivism On Gogol Street, we’ll travel back to the 1930s, when Almaty became the capital of the Kazakh SSR. You’ll see iconic examples of Stalinist Empire architecture, including the buildings of the Three Commissars, the Obkom and the Government House on Old Square. From there, we’ll stroll through the park to admire masterpieces of Soviet Constructivism, such as the House of Communications and the Kazakh Academy of Arts.

Modern Life in Almaty After walking through pedestrianized streets with trendy bars and restaurants, we will enter the more modern areas of the city. You’ll see the high-tech Kazakhtelecom building, nicknamed the “avoska house”, and the elegant Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. Here we will get acquainted with the heritage of Kazakh artists and their contribution to the cultural life of the city.

Park of 28 Panfilov Heroes No visit to Almaty would be complete without a stop at its main park. In the Park of 28 Panfilov Heroes we will visit the ancient wooden cathedral, which survived the devastating earthquake of 1911, admire the traditional Russian-style house and the grandiose monument dedicated to the heroes of World War II.

Green Bazaar Our tour may include a visit to the Green Bazaar, Almaty’s largest and most colorful market, where you will see the bustling life of the city firsthand. From there we will return to the starting point, passing by the famous Arasan Baths complex.

10:00 – Explore the Charyn Canyon, known for its impressive rock formations.
11:30 – Continue to Saty village.
12:50 – Arrival in Saty village.
13:00 – Enjoy lunch at a local cafe.
15:00 – Take an excursion to Lake Kaindy, famous for its flooded forest.
19:00 – Dinner at a cafe in Saty.
20:30 – Check-in at the guest house for overnight stay.


Day 2

08:50 – Meeting at the guest house for departure.
09:00 – Drive to Kolsai Lake, famous for its pristine beauty and surrounding mountains.
09:30 – Start of the Kolsai Lake tour, during which you can hike or relax by the water.
13:00 – Lunch in a local cafe.
15:00 – Return to Almaty.
19:00 – Meeting at the hotel.

Transportation: After the village of Saty to the parking lot at Lake Kaindy, one needs to get to the parking lot by a special off-road vehicle (most often an old Soviet-Russian Uazik). The trip takes 30-40 minutes and can be rough, with limited heating or air conditioning.
From the parking lot to Lake Kaindy, you can walk (30-40 minutes), ride a horse (15-20 minutes), or take an optional off-road vehicle (10-15 minutes).

Local cuisine: Authentic Kazakh dishes are available, but vegetarian options may not cater to specific dietary preferences, such as Indian cuisine.

Insects: There is a risk of insect bites in natural areas.

Guest house accommodation costs range from US$10-20 per person per night.
Bus transfers to the parking lot at Lake Kaindy cost about USD 30-50 per car (up to 10 people).
